2 Year Courses - Biology

AS and A2

To study Biology you need a critical, questioning approach, good powers of observation, and a real interest in the subject. Those with a scientific leaning are at an advantage because Biology uses Mathematics and relates to the laws of Physics and Chemistry, but the syllabus also aims to stand by itself. Biology is a practical subject with experimental work and independent research as an integral part of the course.

Students wishing to follow careers or further studies in Biological Sciences, Medicine, Chemistry, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Environmental or Agricultural Science are well advised to take this course.

Examination / Assessment

The course is taken in units. Units 1, 2 and 3 make up the AS course and will be taken in year 12. Units 1 and 2 are externally examined and unit 3 will include practical skills and research work. Units 4, 5 and 6 make up the A2 course and will be taken in year 13.

Units 4 and 5 are externally examined, whilst unit 6 is made up of an individual practical investigation.
