2 Year Courses - Chemistry

AS-level and A-level

The course aims to introduce and develop the ideas and implications of modern chemistry, primarily through experimental work. Experiments performed by the student lead to ideas, and ideas develop into theories and concepts which in turn lead to further experiments and so on.

Four ideas fundamental to the course are:

  • The use of the periodic table.
  • The relationship between structure and the properties of substances.
  • The way in which energy transfers can determine the feasibility and outcome of reactions.
  • The application of chemical principles to industrial chemistry and environmental chemistry.

Examination / Assessment

The course is taught in modules, which can be taken and retaken once during the course leading to an AS-level at the end of Year 12, with the possibility of continuing in Year 13 to take the full A-level.

Qualification

AS-level and A-level

Entry requirement

For A-level Chemistry a B grade in Science GCSE is required.
