AS Level

Do I have the right to refuse if the police want to ‘stop and search’ me?

Should the government ‘force’ children to eat healthy foods at school or is this a matter of individual choice?

Are ‘ASBOs’ a breach of human rights because they take away an individuals freedom of movement?

The questions above illustrate the kinds of issues covered on the AS Citizenship course.

The course looks at what your rights and responsibilities are as citizens including:

  • The Citizen and the state – a basic introduction to the Legal system in the UK.
  • The Citizen and the political process – looks at politics and ways in which you as a citizen can influence the government.
  • The Citizen, society and community – a more sociological unit looking at topics such as the role of the mass media and the causes of poverty.

Examination / Assessment

This is a one year course with two examination based units. One unit is taken in January and one are taken in May/June. The exam includes a range of questions including data response and short essay questions.
