2 Year Courses - Film Studies

AS-level and A-level

Do you enjoy watching films and talking about them with your friends?

Film Studies is designed to deepen your understanding and enjoyment of the cinema. On the course, you will study films as texts, as an art form and as a social and economic institution. You will examine a wide range of different films developing your skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection. If you are interested in films, this is the course for you.

Examination / Assessment

At AS level:

Coursework – 40% You will analyse how a film is put together to create meaning, through use of cinematography, sound and editing. You will also do a creative project based on a film sequence or short film.

Exam – 60% You will analyse material based on producers and audiences of film. You will also study British and American film in depth.

At A2 level:

Coursework - 50% You will conduct a small scale research project on an area of your choice and your own creative project.

Exam – 50% You will analyse a series of World Cinema topics, spectatorship topics and do a critical study of a single film.

Qualification

AS-level and A-level

Entry requirement

Grade B or Better in English GCSE.+ Arts based GCSE subject would be beneficial.
