School Rules

Fire Procedures

In the event of the fire bell ringing, students and staff should evacuate the building as soon as possible via the correct arrowed routes.  Do not use another route!  Do not stop to collect bags and other personal belongings!  Silence should be observed. The entire school will assemble on the tennis courts.  Students should line up in silence, in alphabetical order in tutor groups so that a register can be called.  Designated fire assembly points will be issued to tutor groups at the start of the year.

Remember that the Sixth Form set an example for the rest of the school, so leave the building quickly, ushering students out of the building.  It is imperative that all leave by the correct route in absolute silence.

Subject Teacher's Expectations
  • To do homework/assignments promptly and submit them on time with the correct supporting documentation/bibliography etc.
  • To ask for clarification when you do not understand.
  • To be on time for lessons and attend regularly (at least meeting the terms of the student agreement).  You should not take holidays during school terms and should avoid too many trips/events which cause you to miss lessons.
  • To do additional work in your own time to support your programme of study (you should be doing 15 hours per week, outside of time spent in the school).
  • To keep a neat, tidy and organised set of notes.
  • To explain any absences and give notices of any absences known in advance.  On your return to catch up with work you have missed - negotiating a timetable for this.
  • To take an active part in lessons, including group and oral work, listening to the ideas of others.
  • To take notice of and act on the advice of the teacher.
  • To bring appropriate text books and equipment to lessons.
  • To achieve an appropriate ‘balance of effort’ in your subjects.

Disciplinary Procedures

Teachers will report matters of concern to the relevant Year Head in writing using Cause for Concern sheets (see appendices).  Although primarily used for lack of attendance, they may also document concerns in relation to lateness or effort.

The Head of Year will always act on the information and feedback to the member of staff who initially reported concern.

All written information relating to a student will be kept on their school record
If the situation remains unresolved a three stage procedure for non-entry to public exams will be implemented.  The criteria, procedure and outline of report follows :-

  • For each stage process there is a difference in staff and parental intervention.
  • If there is satisfactory improvement the student will be removed from the stage system.
  • Whilst on report, each student must see their Year Head at the end of each week.

The above procedures are designed ultimately to support the teaching and learning process in the classroom.
Rules for the Sixth Form are for the benefit of all members of the community and are designed to protect the rights of everyone and help them succeed.  The buildings and facilities are provided for the benefit for everyone - for the present Sixth Form and students in the years to come.  We all want to work and relax in pleasant, clean, well-maintained and safe surroundings.

Students who break rules or contravene regulations should be challenged and if appropriate, reported using the student referral system or by speaking directly to the form tutor.  In the first instance a student should be reported to the form tutor who has first line responsibility for the student.  More serious matters e.g. extreme rudeness, may be reported directly to Sixth Form Year Head.  Sixth Form Management are always willing to discuss individual students but do ask that staff refer minor matters to form tutors in the first instance.

All staff are asked to take responsibility for ensuring that the behaviour and general conduct of Sixth Formers is the standard that we expect.

The Environment

The building and facilities are provided for the benefit of everyone and will hopefully last for many years to come.  We all want to work and relax in pleasant, well-maintained and clean surroundings.

  • All students are expected to take responsibility for their own litter and place it in bins provided.  In particular, students are asked to clear away after meals.
  • The common room, dining area, study area and classrooms should be kept clean and tidy and furniture and fittings respected.
  • Music is not to be played publicly in the school although personal stereos are permitted in the common room during break time.  Students are not to walk around the building with their headphones in their ears or on their heads.  We have a strict “no personal stereo policy” during lesson time.
  • Behaviour in and around the building and the local community should be appropriate and due consideration be given to the rights of others.
  • Students are expected to set a good example to the lower school pupils who share our community.
  • It is vital that students have a place to work and study undisturbed.  The Learning Resource Centre and Common Room are designated quiet areas and must be respected as such during lesson times.
  • Food may be purchased in the Sixth Form Common Room.
  • Chewing/bubble gum is not permitted in the school.
  • Smoking is forbidden at all times.  The taking of illegal drugs and/or alcohol on or near the premises is strictly forbidden and could result in exclusion (confidential counselling is available for students with drug-related problems - students are assured of a sympathetic approach).
  • Students are not allowed to bring visitors on to the premises without prior permission.
  • You are reminded of the agreement that you signed upon enrolment.
  • Card playing and ball games are not allowed in the Common Room.
  • Mobile phones are NOT to be used on the school premises.   If students bring a mobile phone to school it must be switched to silent in class and in the school buildings.  Phones may be confiscated by a member of staff if you do not follow these rules.  The phone will be given to the Head of year with whom the students may make arrangements for its return.

Travelling Between the Sites
  • Areas outside Wimbledon College and the Ursuline High School in Edge Hill, The Downs and Crescent Road are not to be used as gathering places.  Students are to go straight to and from classes at either school.  Using these areas as gathering places causes inconvenience to the public.
  • Eating and drinking in the street are not permitted.
  • Smoking is forbidden at all times. If caught - students will be sent home immediately.

Driving Policy

Students are discouraged from driving to school due to parking constraints and environmental concerns.  In the event of a student driving to school they must:

  • Hand in their number plate and vehicle details including the name and colour of the car to their year head. This information will be kept on file.
  • Students are NOT allowed to drive between the two sites.
  • Students must park their cars with due care and consideration for the residents
  • Sixth Form students may not give lifts to younger students.
  • Loud music must not be played at any time.
  • Cars must not be over-filled in terms of the insurance policy.

Kindly observe these rules.  They maintain the good names of both schools from which everyone benefits.  Anyone not observing them makes themselves liable to being sent home.

Leave of Absence / Open Days / Medical Appointments

The number of University open day visits, days out on unsupervised trips etc. is scrutinised and students are required to fill in a Leave of Absence form obtainable from the Sixth Form Registrar. It is usual for permission to be granted in reasonable circumstances.

Equally, in the case of medical appointments Form Tutors and subject teachers should be informed using a Leave of Absence Form and shown an appointment card prior to the absence.  Students are discouraged from making medical/dental appointments during school time unless an emergency.  In the case of an emergency the school must be contacted and informed of the student’s absence. Family holidays in term time are only permissible by negotiation with the Headteacher.

Study leave preceding modular AS and A2 level examinations is not allowed.

Please note any absence without prior authorisation may risk EMA payments.

Dress Code

Aim: the purpose of a dress code is for students to develop a sense of what is appropriate to wear in a formal working situation without enforcing a uniform, to set an example to Years 7 to 11 in terms of appearance and for high standards of appearance to be visible within the community.

As in all walks of life, students will be expected to abide by a code of dress in the Sixth Form.  Staff are asked to ensure that the code is being complied with.  It is the responsibility of all students to ensure they are properly attired and view the school as a working environment.  Therefore clothes should be suitable and respectable to the occasion.

Sixth Form Requirements:

  • Sixth Form students are required to wear a dark SUIT with either trousers or a skirt
  • Blouse in the colour of the student’s own choice
  • Shoes should be formal and suitable for wearing with a suit.
  • Hair should be in keeping with formality of the school- with no extreme colouring.
  • All students are expected to follow the dress code on the way to and from school, as well as at school and at school functions
  • You must take notice of any rules given from time to time by the Head of Sixth Form in relation to particular items of clothing or appearance.
  • Sixth Form students should not need to be reminded about standards of dress and appearance.
  • Any student who does not dress accordingly will be sent home. Repeated offences will result in a temporary exclusion.

Dress Code in Lessons – students must remove coats, hats and hoods during lesson times.

Smoking / Alcohol / Illegal Drugs

Smoking is strictly forbidden as it is both unhealthy and anti-social.

The taking or possession of illegal drugs/alcohol on or near the school is strictly forbidden and could/ will result in permanent exclusion.  Public Houses are strictly out of bounds to students at lunchtimes.  No alcohol should be consumed within the course of the day.  The school can provide confidential counselling where appropriate.
