Ursuline High School and Wimbledon College Consortium Sixth Form
Aims
The Catholic school is one part of the Christian community, the church. As part of the church we share a vision of Christian life which, is based upon the gospels.
The task is to give a Christian education to all students. The following quotations elaborate on that task:
-
The Christian education ideal has four key elements
- "The communication of a perspective - centred on faith in Christ a Saviour of all people - which discerns a meaning in human life deeper than or beyond the scope of the senses, culture, the pursuit of a career, politics, nationalism, internationalism, or any scheme of self improvement derived solely from human behaviour."
- "A deep respect for the individuality of all human beings. It must recognise people as they are - maturity or immaturity, their need for encouragement, their limitations and their need for direction, equally it must recognise their need to become more free and their need for us to grow psychologically and spiritually as well as their need for the opportunity to exercise responsible choice, even at the risk of choosing badly."
- "The recognition that all men and women without exception are the children of God... That there is no way to peace except through justice; all Christians are committed in the mission of Christ and his Church to all mankind."
- "The promotion of a sense of mission - through which they (Christian students) are empowered to continue and perpetuate the salvific work of Jesus Christ in the world."
- Signpost and Homecomings 1981 - A Report to the Bishops of England and Wales
- "The Catholic school must provide an experience of a living and worshipping community, and in a way contribute to the entry of its members to the full life of the Church. It should be so inspired by the Gospel that it is seen to be a genuine alternative to other forms of schooling."
- The Easter People 1980
- "The Catholic school aims to help the adolescent in such a way that the development of his own personality will be matched by the growth of that new creation which he became by baptism. It strives to relate all human culture eventually to the news of salvation, so that the light of faith will illumine the knowledge, which students gradually gain of the world of life and of mankind."
- "So it is that while the Catholic school fittingly adjusts itself to the circumstances of advancing times. It is educating its students to promote effectively the welfare of the earthly city and preparing them to serve advancement of the reign of God."
- The Document of Vatican II
- We recognise that a significant proportion of our students do not share our Catholic faith. We welcome them and the contributions they make to our institution. We ask as a condition of enrolment that they accept and respect our Catholicity and will work to create what people should find in a Catholic School – “an atmosphere of sincere respect and friendship”.
